Propositions, projections and things

چکیده

Introduction My interest in this topic arose from work that I was doing on attempting a description of the language used to report language (Thompson, 1994). It rapidly became clear that the commonly used categories were far from adequate, and I therefore turned to Halliday’s (1985) concept of projection as providing a much wider and more usable perspective than traditional ideas of ’reported speech’. However, I found that the data on which my description was based was throwing up phenomena that were not exactly covered by projection; and the close examination of projection involved in trying to apply it to a range of data led me to feel that certain aspects of the concept as presented by Halliday were to some extent unclear. This led to a ’tweaking’ of projection, a realignment of mainly already existing ideas, in order to make it work more effectively in the context of what I was trying to do. What I would like to do here is to briefly outline projection as seen by Halliday, indicate the reasons why I think it needs tweaking and how I propose tweaking it; and then look in a tentative, preliminary way at the implications for text analysis not only in terms of reporting but more broadly in terms of what I will be calling the propositional cline.

Propositions and Same-Saying: Introduction

Philosophers often talk about the things we say, or believe, or think, or mean. The things are often called ‘propositions’. A proposition is what one believes, or thinks, or means when one believes, thinks, or means something. Talk about propositions is ubiquitous when philosophers turn their gaze to language, meaning and thought. But what are propositions? Is there a single class of things tha...

Schiffer’s new theory of propositions

Every fifteen years or so Stephen Schiffer writes a state of the art book on the philosophy of language, with special emphasis on belief ascriptions, meaning, and propositions. For us, however, who believe that that-clauses are first and foremost clauses, not referr...

Propositions as Cognitive Acts

Scott Soames My topic is the concept of information needed in the study of language and mind. It is widely acknowledged that knowing the meaning of an ordinary declarative sentence, or the content of a representational mental state, involves knowing which things it represents as being which ways. Knowing this gives one knowledge of the truth conditions of the sentence or state, which are ways t...

Binding and Co-Reference

• Verbs, adjectives, nominals etc. can be seen as predicates. • Predicates require arguments in order to be used to express thoughts (propositions) – E.g. ‘run’ requires one argument; ‘kiss’ requires two arguments; ‘is happy’ requires one argument etc. – In the above cases, the arguments should refer to individuals. – In other cases, (like ‘thinks’) arguments might denote other, more abstract t...

Propositional Attitudes? *

According to the standard lore on propositions, there are many propositional attitudes, including belief, fear, and desire. The standard lore is partly correct: belief is a propositional attitude. But, so this paper argues, fear and desire are never propositional attitudes, not even when the content of the relevant fear or desire can be fully expressed by using a that-clause. 1. What I Mean by ...
